Di Zhao graduated from Wuhan Conservatory, after which he played at the Hunan Broadcast Orchestra for two years as its principal flutist. In 1984 he became the principal flutist at the National Ensemble Orchestra of China in Beijing, a post that he held until 1990 when he came to the United States to pursue his Master’s Degree at Indiana University. In 1992 he attended West Iowa Technical College, where he enrolled in the program of Band Instrument repair.
Over the next two decades, Di Zhao mastered every aspect of flute making, held positions at the highest levels within the flute industry, and worked closely with many flute makers of renown, including Burkart Flutes, Arista Flutes, and many more. . He officially joined Verne Q. Powell Flutes in 1993 as a technician, and eventually rose to the position of Vice President of Quality. While there, he helped establish the Powell Sonare line. In 2004 he left Powell to joint-purchase William S. Haynes Flute Company with Qian Ni of Eastman Strings. As the Vice President of the new Haynes regime, he established the Haynes Amadeus student line. In 2006, Di left Haynes to pursue his life-long dream of establishing his own flute company, and Di Zhao Flutes was born.
Di Zhao Flutes has come a long way in the past decade. Starting from the basement of his own home, Di Zhao grew his new company to where it is today, with offices in Westford and Tianjin, and a rapidly expanding factory in Jingzhou with over fifty impeccably trained workers all producing the world's finest quality flutes.
